I have actually published 99 Bricks on Binary Joy already but I like it so much I thought I should mention it again.

99 Blocs is a brand new physics based Tetris style affair. It all starts off quite simply. Stack up the Tetris blocks as high as you can, in fact you can use your Tetris skills quite freely to start off with. Creating your first line is where the confusion starts though. The line doesn’t go away. This soon makes sense when you realise that the screen is scrolling so that the tower does not reach the top…

The objective in 99 Bricks is to make the highest tower you can with the 99 bricks from the title. This takes precision placement, a steady hand, and a fast mind.

The game makes excellent use of physics to make the blocks stack up before toppling to their doom. Clumsy moves are swiftly punished with the stack collapsing. You really do need to plan ahead to make things work as expected without them falling apart.

Play 99 Bricks now, you’ll never look at Tetris the same again.

Cletus Clay has been in development limbo for years - In fact I had almost forgotten about it. However this week a random blog post from Anthony Flack has prompted much excitement from those in the know.

Anthony Flack is best known for his shoot em up, Platypus, a claymation based game involving big vehicles and lots of gooey explosions. Personally I found the game to be too hard but the love and attention put into the game were very apparent and it was clear this was something a bit special. All this meant I was looking forward to seeing what came next from the house of Flack.

Cletus Clay actually started development about 5 years ago - and I have even played a very early demo (which is at least 4 years old now). Cletus Clay is a platformer involving a farmer rescuing his cows from aliens. The initial scope for the game was vast with many platforming levels, and stacks of mini games. I guess things got a bit too much for Anthony as he went radio silent for a few years, joining forces with Tunasnax and reworking things…

Since then, work has continued in relative secrecy – we have extensively re-designed the entire structure of the game, completely reprogrammed everything from scratch, added multi-player support and a whole lot of other features and reworked the graphics for HD. I’ve written design documents, made submissions, and harassed the programmers with unreasonable requests. Everyone has worked really hard to get us to where we are now and I do believe that what we have here is the beginnings of a pretty cool game.

You can read all the details over on the Cletus Clay blog.

It’s great to see that Cletus hasn’t died and knowing Anthony this is going to be a massive labour of love so it WILL be finished.

Whilst you’re waiting for the full version of Mirrors Edge to come out you can get your hands on the beta of the 2d version of the game. Unfortunately I am going to be away this weekend so I won’t be able to play the game until next week. Hopefully I will have some time then to give it a proper play through.

Mirrors Edge 2d (not sure what the real name will be) is being developed in Flash and is being created by Brad Bourne, the man behind Fancy Pants - and it shows. The visual stylings match the 3d game quite nicely but the controls and athleticism of Faith, the character, are pretty similar to Fancy Pants himself. That said there are new moves, such as wall running and climbing, as well as new objectives so it does all work quite nicely and serve as a decent preview of the real thing.

Warfare 1917 is a simple concept beautifully put together.

In essence it’s a strategy game. You have to recruit troops and send them to battle to beat the enemy forces. To avoid favouritism you can choose from either the English and German armies. Once you’ve picked a side you have to get some of your forces from one side of the battle field to the other - sounds simple but you have to get your army into, and out of, the trenches.

Like many of these types of games you earn credits which can be spent upgrading your abilities. This will open up new characters, more powerful weapons and, eventually, tanks.

The game has a really gritty dirty feel. Seeing the soldiers get hurled sky high from a mortar bomb/ grenade is not something you see very often in free flash games, certainly not ones that are trying to be realistic, but in Warfare 1917 it will happen all the time and feels right.

There is a certain amount of tactics involved with which units get sent to which set of trenches but really it’s all down to timing. It’s well worth looking at other parts of the level to make sure there is nothing coming for you, and making use of the various air support options you have. Unfortunately things become quite easy once you have the tank but that doesn’t stop the earlier levels from being rather “moreish”.

Play Warfare 1917 now and let me know what you think in the comments.

However another user noticed that whilst the games looked good, they weren’t all completed - many were still tech demos. So he went and created a response to RinkuHeros video showing 100 finished Game Maker games.

Between the two videos there are an awful lot of good looking games being made with Game Maker - considerably more than I had realised. There are quite a few I’ve seen in these two videos that I think I’ll have to download and have a proper play of.

Enter a world of pain and suffering. Fear the robot overlords as you are Hunted Forever.

Hunted Forever is a stylised platform game. It’s made by the same people who made Towering Forever and features a similar platform engine. This time, however, the emphasis is on platforming as opposed to strategy.

You control a small man who has to run around what has to be one of the largest single level environments I have seen in any 2d games (or 3d for that matter) ever. It looks like the game is one big level object, and the different levels are even distinguishable based upon their decoration.

Your objective is to get all of the machine parts back to the base, whilst running and jumping around the massive world, avoiding the increasingly challenging rockets that are being fired at you, almost from point blank range, by a slightly psycopathic robot flying saucer thing.

Hunted Forever clearly attended the Portal school of storytelling, giving a constant stream of abuse to the player as they run around the game level.

Like all good games these days Hunted Forever has a store where you can repair yourself and upgrade your weapons and other abilities.

Hunted Forever is great fun… until that pesky flying saucers stream of bullets becomes a full blown downpour of death.
